English tutoring boosts a child’s confidence and helps them to communicate more clearly. It turns ideas into precise explanations by improving their grammar, vocabulary, and written organisation. With personalized help, learning is more fun and effective, helping children do better in school while enjoying the language more.
Learning is a journey, and I’m here to support and inspire your child every step of the way.

Explore what we offer
During the one-to-one online tutoring session, I will connect with your child via a video call platform such as Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, allowing them to share screens and resources instantly. We will work on either GCSE English Literature or Language skills, depending on which is felt to be most needed and is chosen by the you and your child.
Throughout all sessions, I will provide personalised feedback, adapting explanations to your child’s understanding and answering any questions. We will end with a summary of key points and set targeted tasks for independent study, ensuring your child feels confident and supported moving forward. I will also email you, the parent/caregiver, with a summary of the lesson and how your child is doing as well as a similar summary of the key points that were covered as well as any tasks given for your child to complete.
I will work with your child in your home on the same aspects of the GCSE English exams as would be done online. A quiet yet public area needs to be available and another adult needs to be present in the home for safeguarding purposes. You must live in the Guildford area in order to have in-person tutoring.
What to expect in an English tutoring session
In an English Literature session, activities will include reviewing key themes from a set text, such as An Inspector Calls, and exploring character motivations and social contexts. Key quotations will be discussed in detail with analysis of language techniques and their effects. I will then guide your child through a timed practice essay question, helping to structure paragraphs logically and develop strong topic sentences. Together, we will edit a draft, focusing on integrating textual evidence smoothly and refining analytical language.
An English Language session will be dependant on what specific areas of the exam are to be strengthened. Sessions over questions 1-4 will include having the student read a selected passage aloud, while I guide him/her in underlining key phrases and annotating the text for understanding. We will discuss the writer’s use of language, exploring techniques such as metaphors, similes, and imagery, breaking down how each contributes to meaning and effect. Your child will practice considering the writer’s purpose and the context of the text, which encourages critical thinking. All of this will be done in conjunction with practise in writing a short response paragraph, with my modelling of how best to structure answers.
Sessions over English Language question 5 will be tailored to the student's current skill level, with targeted feedback on his/her writing style, structure, vocabulary, and use of literary techniques. Using screen sharing and collaborative documents, I will demonstrate how to plan effectively, meet assessment objectives, and develop engaging content. Regular practice tasks and step-by-step modelling will help the student gain confidence and refine their writing to meet exam standards.
A little about me
I have been teaching for 24 years, spanning ages from 11 to 18 years old as well as adult English language learners. I started my teaching in Texas and moved to the UK in 2019 to the Guildford area in order to teach at Kings College Guildford. I have enjoyed my time in the classroom but have now moved to one-to-one tutoring in order to help students who would benefit from a little extra personalised instruction.
I have extensive experience with working with students of all ability levels, including SEN, gifted, and everything in between. I am most familiar with the AQA and Eduqas exam boards but can work with students on any aspect of the exams that they are struggling with, no matter the exam board.
Investing in private tutoring for your child’s GCSE English Literature and Language exams is more than just academic support—it’s a powerful step toward unlocking their full potential. With personalised guidance, focused attention, and expert strategies, tutoring can transform confusion into clarity and build the confidence your child needs to excel. These crucial years lay the foundation for future success, and the right support can make all the difference. Give them the opportunity to thrive, not just pass—because they deserve to shine.
